We left home this morning with the intention of hiking to Bassi Falls in Eldorado National Forest north of Pollock Pines, CA. We followed the directions given to us and did well until we found a marker indicating Bassi Falls. We were on the right path. Continuing on, the road no longer matched the directions AND the road got narrower and ruttier and so bad that we feared we wouldn't be able to turn back. My thinking was that we should have continued on another .3 mile, but Dan's thinking was that we needed to turn around while we still could. So we did and so, we'll never know if we were near the falls. Later we read a review where someone had to have his family airlifted out of there when they got lost (cell phone still working!). We both decided that never knowing was better than getting into trouble in an area where no one knew we were at.
So, we backtracked and got back on the main road. It wasn't long until we found another waterfall to enjoy. Maybe not so spectacular, but much safer. We enjoyed the drive, making note of snow capped mountains in the distance, dogwood blooming along the roadside, and those funny pine trees that stick out like sore thumbs (cellular towers in disguise.) On the return home we stopped at Los Hermanos Restaurant in Pollock Pines for a very pleasant lunch. How many miles did we hike? "0."
