The Old Cowboy's Guitar - Sample of "Master's Palette" or "Dead Palette"


The sample palette above is called a "Dead Palette" and was used by master painters such as Caravaggio and Rembrandt. The appearance of blue was created by making a black and white mixture of paint and using it adjacent to warmer brown colors. This palette is also used by many modern artists, especially as a portrait palette. The colors are yellow ochre, burnt sienna, burnt umber, black and white. I used Mars Black and Chinese White. They are all pretty opaque colors. After making the sample above, I decided to use this palette on the watercolor painting below.
